About us
The Besom in Witney started in 2006 and aims to create a bridge between God's church in West Oxfordshire and the many people in the area who are in real need.
When we look at the Gospels, we see Jesus showing compassion for the poor and needy. We don't fundraise or ask for specific items. When there is a need, we pray for God's provision.
There are various ways you can get involved and make a difference to the lives of those on the margins of society - for example, by giving your money, time, skills or things.
What is The Besom?
The Besom was founded by James Odgers in 1987, following a visit to Hong Kong where he was struck by the ever-widening gap between those of us who have and those who are in need.
The name 'Besom' derives from a broom made of twigs - hence Besom's strapline of 'Sweep away suffering'.
There are now Besoms in many towns across the country. For more information about the work of The Besom nationally, click here.
